In November of 2004, coalition forces led by U.S. Marines began an offensive against Iraqi insurgents in the city of Fallujah. Knowing an attack was coming, the insurgents had prepared significant defensive fortifications--including tunnels, trenches, barriers, IEDs, and booby traps--leading to some of the heaviest urban combat that Marines have been involved in since the Battle of Hue City during the Vietnam War.
